One of Kinetics best seller was the Luna, the companys Moped that sold in massive numbers across the country, especially in the rural market. The Kinetic Group had sold a major stake of Kinetic Motor Company Limited (KMCL), sold its two-wheeler business assets to MTWL (Mahindra Two Wheelers Limited).
Back in the days, there was competition to the Luna, and mopeds were the means to commute in rural India. At the moment, TVS has a major stake in the mopeds in India, and this segment isnt growing rapidly. We arent sure if Mahindras plan is to revive the Luna brand, but recently the company got the Luna and Luna TFR, re-registered under the Mahindra Two Wheeler brand name
The Luna was a 50cc moped, however if it will be updated, then we could also expect Mahindra to introduce a bigger engine with approximate displacement of 75cc. There is no confirmation on this front, as Mahindra has been working on various new two-wheelers be it scooters or even motorcycles. But the Luna will be a good option to export and reach out to the markets in remote locations of Africa.
The TVS XL is currently one of the best-selling mopeds in India, and it has a 70cc engine with automatic transmission. The Mahindra Luna and Luna TFR might be a good idea for export, and for the Indian market, at the moment the moped segment isnt growing very fast. Even in the domestic market, it will help Mahindra to gain a good percent if it could a class-leading product. Last month, TVS sold 64,467 units of its mopeds, compared to February 2015, when the sales were 65,541, a decline of 1.6 percent in year-on-year, however an increase by 16 percent in month-on-month.
