Hi All,
My name is Shailesh and I am a software consultant by profession, leaving in Navi Mumbai..
I have got the first bike of mine just couple of months back.. And it was not new at all.. Good old 25 Years bike..
But I was happy to get it.. For 2 reasons - 1) It was Yamaha RX100 - 1988 Model 2) I got it from it's first owner (My Sister's Father-in-law) - a very rare case as per my knowledge.. Generally this kind of old RX100 atleast have 2/3 owners in the past.
It was in a bit battered condition when i got it home. Was rusting for almost 2-2.5 years as my brother in law is in sales and didn't get much time to drive it. As it was his first bike as well, he didn't want to sell it to somebody else apart from family. So I seized the opportunity!
Last couple of months were of struggle with it - Gear shifter was a nightmare so i replaced it (Older one is still with me). 8-10 times it went kaput while riding so i had to push it all the way back to home. Half of the time, it was due to wrong style of driving however i was learning - so that is it.
Now I can drive it fluently n confidently in traffic as well.. However now it is high time to come back on ground and think about bike more seriously so it can last longer.
I have few points in mind - All the experts can share their thoughts about it as I need as much as help possible here.
1. It's Paper work is still pending - It's Thane RTO Passing of 1988. I heard that after 15 years, we need to re-register it. Is it true folks? Also it's color changed from Red to Black - Will there be any issue while transferring or re-registering on my name? Please advise .
2. It's already restored once - 10 Years back - by my Brother In Law - Now I don't know how many OEM parts it have.. I checked carb for example.. "Made in India" printed on it.. It should be Japan as per my knowledge. I will be opening the engine as well - to have look inside it and decide if it needs some repairing as well.
3. It's frame have a considerable amount of rusting - It has also developed a bend due to which it's height on the is reduced and putting presure on the rear fender. Can somebody provide me the information on reliable sources for getting it sandblasted/painted preferrably in Navi Mumbai. Also need the same info for croming/plating/buffing as well for other parts like silencer and break paddle. Posting the picks so I can have experts opinion about it. I might consider it replacing however not comfortable; will go for it only as a last resort.
4. It's petrol tank is also a goner - Need some serious piece of repairing or Total replacement - It is my major worry apart from it's frame. OEM MRP - 3800/-. However I am not able to get my favorite design - Total black with 2 golden strips.. I didn't like the new design.. Any thoughts here, folks?
5. Earlier thought of changing it to 5 speed however decided against it.. Don't want to meddle with engine much. Folks let me know your views here as sometimes I still get torn between 2 thoughts - Keeping it 4 speed or converting it to 5 speed.
6. I have not got a spares list as such - still started sourcing the spares which i can see gone kaput with naked eyes. I am lucky enough to have a authorized Yamaha Spares Dealer on 5 minutes walking distance from my place - Spares I have got so far - 1. Handle Baar (Currently have bullet handle) 2. Chain Cover 3. Side Panels with (RX100) monograms and embelms 4. (Yamaha) Monograms on Petrol Tank 5. Tail Light 6. Rear Shockabs (Escorts). Total cost 3700/- approx. Checked for block piston - Rs. 8200/-. Will be getting headlight today or tomorrow @ 525/- approx. The spares center guy told me that except carb they have got almost all the spares. All Engine part available. Waiting period is 8-10 days. Can somebody help me to get my spares list correct after going through the pics?
7. Since it's a 6v machine; thinking of to convert it to 12v.
8. Will be changing the entire wiring and cables since it's a long time to get it replaced.
Since vitamin M is also a major factor; i have decided to actually do it in November-December. From now on I will be sourcing spares and studying the other restoration threads. I need all the support and help from you guys to make it success. Posting the pics and spares for your review and comments..
