Mumbai traffic police said goodbye to cash penalties. Starting from 12th January 2016 if someone caught violating traffic rules, will be asked to pay it via debit or credit card as traffic police has finally launched the E-Challan system on Monday.

However, for motorists not carrying any cards, there is another option — they will be given a 15-day window to pay the fines through National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT). States like Telangana and Tamil Nadu already have such systems in place for online payment of traffic fines.

In Addition to this the Mumbai Traffic police is also in process of installing speed cameras, which will record the traffic violation and register the vehicle number to generate E-Challan.

The Mumbai Traffic Police on 12th January, Tuesday announced nine initiatives as part of its ‘Road Safety Week’ programme. In addition to speed cameras, the city will also boast of Red Light Violation Detectors and information display booths.

Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis launched the initiative. Diwakar Raote, Transport Minister, Commissioner of Police Ahmad Javed and Milind Bharambe, Joint Commissioner of Traffic Police were also present at the event.

Milind Bharambe, Joint Commissioner of Traffic Police, said,
Quote:

“In order to make Mumbai safer we have introduced many digital initiatives. These will not just help us catch offenders but also act as a deterrent for those who like to break traffic rules. We will be providing swiping machines to traffic cops posted at signals and junctions. An offender will be given the option of swiping his debit or credit card. If both are not available, his license will be impounded and his details noted down. The offender will be given 15 days time to deposit the said amount in a bank.”
The Traffic Police has also introduced “Alco Booth” a self alcohol checking device that will measure people’s alcohol level. If the level is higher than the allowed, the user will be asked to take a cab. These Alco Booth will be installed in public spaces, bars and pubs.
