He was born in Kamalia, Punjab(Pakistan), but he chose to move to Ludhiana, after the country's partition, and established Hero cycles, which also turned out to be the world's largest bicycle maker in 1975, defeating Atlas cycles on its way to the top.
Way back in the 1980s, motorcycles were not known to be the hotsellers of the scooter and moped dominated market. Still, Munjal took the plunge with Honda to create one of the most successful Joint Venture which lasted 27 years. Munjal's Hero group came out with flying colors from the 80's, leading the company towards many records, such as most vehicles sold within a month, maximum 2 wheelers sold in India, most sold motorcycle brand in India, etc.
Not only did Hero Honda rule the industry as India's top two-wheeler firm, but Munjal built a loyal base of vendors and robust dealer network that his rivals still envy. Hero has now sold over 60 million two-wheelers and grown into a Rs 28,000 crore company. The Centre had conferred prestigious Padma Bhushan award to him in March 2005 for his contribution in trade and Industry.
